    Popular explanation of quantitative easing

The term quantitative easing, first coined by the Bank of Japan in 2001, refers to the central bank deliberately injecting excess funds into the banking system, such as printing large amounts of money or buying government or corporate bonds, to keep the base rate near zero, thereby creating new liquidity for the economic system to encourage spending and borrowing. Usually, monetary authorities take such extreme measures only when conventional tools such as interest rates fail. Quantitative easing is a type of monetary policy in which the central bank increases the money supply through open market operations, which can be understood as creating a specified amount of money "out of nothing" and is often simplified to indirectly printing more money. In specific operations, the central bank purchases securities and other assets through the open market, which increases the funds in the bank's settlement account opened by the central bank, thereby injecting new liquidity into the banking system.
