Analysis of the four core roles of foreign exchange reserves

The role of foreign exchange reserves includes adjusting the balance of payments and interveningforeign exchange marketIn many aspects, such as maintaining international credibility and enhancing comprehensive national strength, these functions together constitute its important economic significance.

    1. Adjust the balance of payments to ensure external payments

    2. Intervene in the foreign exchange market to stabilize the exchange rate of the local currency

    3. Maintain international credibility and enhance external financing capabilities

    4. Enhance comprehensive national strength and the ability to resist risks

    Number one.

Take our country as an example. In the past, a compulsory foreign exchange settlement system was adopted, and the foreign exchange imported and exported by enterprises needed to be bound by relevant regulatory agencies. In the international market, the US dollar is the main medium of exchange, and gold is widely recognized as the currency of various countries. Therefore, maintaining sufficient foreign exchange reserves is essential to ensure external payments.

    Second point:

In the foreign exchange market, the domestic exchange rate is affected by the relationship between supply and demand. In order to maintain the stability of the exchange rate, the management authority can use the foreign exchange reserves held to intervene appropriately. For example, in the case of the RMB, when facing appreciation pressure, from the perspective of supply and demand, it is necessary for the central bank to buy dollars and release RMB to achieve balance.

    Third point:

The solvency of a country depends to a large extent on its economic strength, and economic development is the foundation. Foreign exchange reserves are one of the most direct indicators of solvency.

    Fourth point:

Foreign exchange reserves represent the assets of the central bank. The larger the scale, the stronger the assets of the central bank, and the stronger the economic support for the country in handling international affairs. At the same time, when international financial fluctuations occur, abundant foreign exchange reserves can enhance the ability to cope with them. For example, during the Asian financial crisis in 1997, many countries announced that their currencies would depreciate, but our country announced that the RMB would not depreciate based on a responsible attitude. This is backed by sufficient foreign exchange reserves. From Depu's perspective, the rational use of foreign exchange reserves has important reference value for maintaining economic stability.
