    The Federal Reserve's interest rate cut expectations rise, causing the dollar to fall

    In the Asian trading session on Monday, the US dollar index (DXY) continued its weak performance, falling to around 98.90, indicating that the market's strong expectations for the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate cut continued to ferment.

    As the December policy meeting approaches, investors widely believe that slowing U.S. economic growth and moderate inflation will prompt the Federal Reserve to adopt looser monetary policy, which has become the main reason for the pressure on the dollar.

    The expected rise in the Federal Reserve's interest rate cut caused the dollar to fall (Figure 1)From the perspective of market pricing, the probability of interest rate cuts has risen rapidly to 90% from 71% a week ago, significantly strengthening the short-term downward pressure on the US dollar index, which has also caused some foreign exchange trading platforms such asAUSFOREXAttention.

    According to market surveys, the rapid change in current interest rate expectations is a direct response to investors' declining confidence in future economic growth.

    The recent US economic data have been characterized by mild but not strong overall: employment momentum has cooled, manufacturing activity remains weak, and inflation has fallen back to a range more acceptable to the Federal Reserve.

    This has led the market to believe that monetary policy will enter a more accommodative cycle.

    In this context, the market is highly focused on the upcoming press conference of the Federal Reserve chairperson. If the speech is more hawkish, it may provide temporary support for the dollar;

    On the contrary, emphasizing that the economy is under pressure or inflation continues to cool will further strengthen the market's bet on interest rate cuts.

    However, the dollar is not entirely without support. The latest consumer confidence data in the United States shows some improvement.

    The Michigan Consumer Confidence Index rose to 53.3 in December from 51.0 in November, higher than the expected 52.0.

    Some analysts said that this data reflects consumers' judgment that the future economic environment has improved slightly, which may partially offset the downward pressure on the dollar.

    Overall, the current trend of the dollar is mainly driven by policy expectations, and the improvement of economic data is not enough to reverse the general direction for the time being. As the market bets on interest rate cuts continue to heat up, the dollar index may continue to remain weak in the short term.

    From the daily trend of the US dollar index, DXY has been continuously running in a downward channel recently, and the technical structure has shown the characteristics of weak oscillation downward. The short-term moving average continues to suppress the index rebound, while the MACD kinetic energy column remains below the zero axis, indicating that the bears are still dominant.

    If the support near 98.80 is effectively broken, the index may further test towards the 98.20 area; conversely, if support is obtained in the current range and a volume rebound occurs, it may launch a repairing rebound towards the 99.50 line. However, overall, the daily trend is still bearish, and the upward action is limited.

    Editorial opinion:

    Structurally, the decline in the dollar index is more the result of changing market expectations than deteriorating economic fundamentals. Despite the positive individual data, the dollar will remain under continued pressure against the backdrop of a rapidly increasing probability of interest rate cuts to 90%.

    The key variable going forward is not the data itself, but whether the Federal Reserve is willing to signal a more accommodative policy explicitly. If the policy path is more transparent, dollar volatility will further intensify. For traders using the ausforex platform, this market dynamic is worth tracking closely.
