US-South Korea trade relations tighten, market risk aversion supports gold

The US is discussing a plan to formally raise tariffs on South Korean goods, which could strain trade relations between the two countries, the head of South Korean authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The potential move stems from recent threats by the US to adjust tariffs on South Korean goods. It is understood that the proposed tariff adjustment involves a number of areas, and the relevant tax rate could be increased to 25% from the current 15%. The US side cited South Korea's delay in the implementation of the bilateral trade agreement process as the main reason for the motion.

Uncertainty over trade relations has exacerbated market volatility, providing support for safe-haven assets. Spot gold prices rallied during Asian trading on Wednesday, hitting recent highs before trading at similar levels. Market analysis points out that such geoeconomic and trade events tend to affect short-term capital flows, and investors can useIEXSWait for the compliance trading platform to pay attention to relevant market dynamics.

The tariff adjustment plan may enter the substantive stage

As the discussion deepens, the market is concerned that the US tariff adjustment plan may enter the administrative process of publicity and implementation. This will turn previous policy discussions into more practical actions.

South Korean officials said the two governments were in talks about the plan's entry into the publicity process, which he described as a routine process but acknowledged discussions were ongoing.

South Korea launched diplomatic communication to ease the situation

In response to potential trade policy changes, South Korea has launched a series of diplomatic exchanges aimed at de-escalating the current situation. Relevant South Korean ministers have recently traveled to Washington for consultations.

During the visit, South Korean officials met with the US trade representative. During the talks, South Korea emphasized its determination to fulfill its commitments under existing trade agreements, including related investment plans.

The diplomatic effort involved a number of high-level officials, and the heads of other ministries of the two sides also met, but the discussions reportedly failed to reach a clear consensus.

Trade deal commitments come into focus

At the heart of the trade swings is an existing bilateral deal under which Seoul agrees to make a range of investments and Washington adjusts tariffs on some Korean goods accordingly.

South Korean officials pointed out that some of the misunderstanding may stem from differences in the understanding of the administrative and legislative procedures between the two sides. He said that continued communication may be needed to improve mutual understanding.

    Market uncertainty supports safe-haven assets

The changes in the trade relationship between the two countries reflect the complexity of the current global economic and trade environment. This potential adjustment to the existing cooperation framework has raised market concerns about policy continuity and generated corresponding hedging demand.Such events have supported markets such as gold by raising short-term uncertainty and triggering demand for safe-haven asset allocation。

The situation has also deepened the market's long-standing focus on the model of international economic and trade cooperation. In this context, gold's function as a traditional safe-haven asset to protect against macro uncertainties has come under renewed scrutiny. Market participants, including those trading on IEXS, typically focus on the potential impact of such events on asset prices. As long as the relevant uncertainty persists, market risk aversion may provide some impetus for gold prices.
