Differences between MQ4 and EX4 files and analysis of compilation methods

In the MetaTrader 4 platform, custom indicators are usually saved in the C:/Program Files/experts/indicators directory. This directory mainly contains two types of files: MQ4 files and EX4 files. The MQ4 file is the source code file of MT4 custom indicators. It is written in a high-level programming language and allows developers to read and modify it manually. But the platform cannot directly execute the MQ4 file. It needs to be automatically compiled into an EX4 executable file when MT4 starts. The EX4 file is the executable file generated after compilation and can be directly loaded and used by the MT4 platform. For usingKCM ForexFor traders on other platforms, understanding the characteristics of these two files is fundamental to managing custom tools.

The MQ4 file must be compiled and converted to an EX4 file before it can be executed normally on the MT4 platform.

To compile MQ4 source code files into EX4 executable files, there are two main common methods:

When the MT4 trading platform starts, it automatically scans the indicator directory and compiles the MQ4 file into the corresponding EX4 file.

    2. Open the MQ4 file using MT4's built-in MQL language editor, and then click the "Write" or Compile button on the editor to manually generate the EX4 file. Familiarity with this process helps to efficiently deploy trading indicators in environments such as KCM Forex.

In the indicator directory, there is usually a file named mqlcache.dat. This file is used to cache the file information in the directory. If you encounter a situation where MT4 cannot automatically compile the MQ4 file, try to delete this cache file, which can often solve the problem and ensure the normal loading of trading tools.
