The characteristics of different trading sessions in the foreign exchange market and the choice of trading timing

As a Forex trader, it is crucial to understand the different Forex trading sessions in order to execute your trading strategy accordingly. In this article, we will discuss the salient features of each trading session, which will help you determine which session is best suited.

    1. Sydney trading hours

The Sydney session is the first to open, starting at 10pm GMT in the summer and 9pm GMT in the winter. The trading session ends at 7am GMT in the summer and 6am GMT in the winter. Volatility and liquidity in the Sydney session generally remain low and gradually increase in other sessions that follow. Traders typically avoid trading sessions with lower liquidity and volatility as they offer fewer trading opportunities.

You should consider trading the Australian and New Zealand dollars during the Sydney session.

    2. Asian trading hours

The Asian or Tokyo trading session starts at 12am GMT in summer and winter and ends at 9am GMT in summer and winter. The forex market is gaining momentum during the Asian session, which many traders use to gauge future trends in the forex market. The Asian session accounts for about 6% of total forex trading volume.

The Asian or Tokyo session is known for its low liquidity and volatility, which makes it easier for traders to determine their entry and exit points. Traders can easily adopt risk management strategies, as traders can quickly react to adverse market movements and change their strategies accordingly. Traders can take advantage of breakout opportunities during the overlap period that begins with the London or European session. During the overlap period, liquidity and volatility begin to increase, leading to breakouts.

You should consider trading the crosses of the Japanese yen, Australian dollar, Singapore dollar, and New Zealand dollar during the Asian session, as these currency pairs are most actively traded during that session.

    3. European trading hours

London, as the world's economic centre, accounts for more than 35 per cent of total trading volumes. Other important European cities participating in the European session include Frankfurt, Milan and Amsterdam. The European session is known for its high liquidity, as large Financial Institutions Groups and banks trade on London's foreign exchange market and conduct foreign exchange business during the European session.

You can enjoy high liquidity, volatility and low spreads during the European session. At the end of the London or European session, the trend sometimes reverses as European traders lock in some of the gains. Due to high liquidity and volatility, you can trade almost any currency pair, but the most traded currency pairs during the trading session include EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, USD/JPY, EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY. And due to high volatility, you need to be careful with your risk management strategy when executing trades, as sudden market fluctuations can interfere with your account.

    4. US trading hours

New York is the centre city for the US trading session, accounting for about 15 per cent of the world's total daily foreign exchange trading volume. Volatility and liquidity remained high during the overlap between the European session and the US session. However, as the European session ended, trading momentum weakened. Other financial centres, such as Toronto and Chicago, also contributed to trading during the US session.

Since the US dollar participates in about 85% of foreign exchange trading, the US session is extremely important as most of the dollar's movements occur during US trading hours. Major economic reports and data are released during US session, which usually triggers significant movements in the dollar. On Friday, you can see a reversal of trend as most US traders position squaring in the second half of the US session to protect themselves from major news events overnight.

    conclusion

To be a successful Forex trader, you should know the opening and closing times of each of the four sessions. Some traders in Asia prefer to trade during the US session to capture the main movement of the US dollar, while some traders in the US prefer to trade during the European session. Each session has its own strengths and weaknesses, and you should decide which session to trade based on your trading style and trading strategy.
