The US dollar continues to rise, emerging market stocks and currencies "Alexander"

Sept. 27 - Emerging market stocks fell to their lowest level since March as the dollar strengthened and U.S. consumer confidence waned, dampening investor enthusiasm for risky assets.

As the dollar strengthens and U.S. consumer confidence decreases,Emerging market stocks fall to lowest level since MarchThis has dampened investors' enthusiasm for risky assets.

Expectations that U.S. interest rates will stay higher for longer, and possibly even rise, have weighed on stocks over the past two weeks.

The rise in risk aversion sent MSCI Inc.'s emerging market equity index down about 1 percent, nearing its second straight monthly decline, while a basket of emerging market currencies traded at two-week lows. The currency slid further after a report showed U.S. consumer confidence fell to a four-month low in September.

Neil Kashkari, president of the Minneapolis Fed, said he expected the central bank would need to raise interest rates again this year if the US economy was stronger than expected.

"The broad appreciation of the dollar continues, based on hawkish comments from Federal Reserve members, who have re-emphasized that U.S. interest rates are likely to remain unchanged for an extended period of time," UniCredit analysts wrote in a note.

Hungarian Central BankAfter cutting the one-day deposit rate by five percentage points to 13 percent, reiterated the more hawkish tilt of monetary policy. Inflation remains "unacceptably high" and policymakers must be "cautious," Deputy Governor Barnabas Virag said at an online briefing on Tuesday.

Although the Hungarian forint has weakened recently,The Central Bank of BudapestArguing with the government over Hungary's deteriorating fiscal position, inflation, and growth prospects, a rate cut remains within expectations.

The Hungarian forint initially appreciated by about 0.8% against the dollar, but later reversed its gains, trading down 0.2%. The standoff between the country's economic leadership is "negative" for the exchange rate, and "the Hungarian forint may weaken in the short term," Tatha Ghose, a strategist at Commerzbank, wrote in a note before the rate cut was announced.

BrazilThe swap rate and bond yields rose after meeting notes issued by the central bank reinforced the message that the rate-cutting cycle was unlikely to accelerate. Brazil launched the rate-cutting cycle last month and cut the base rate by 50 basis points to 12.75% in August and September, respectively.
